DAY 15 YANGON At 8:30 AM be ready in the lobby of The Strand Hotel in prepartion for a day of exploring. Board the local 'circle train' which runs from Yangon's main railway station in a circle around various neighborhoods in town and on the outskirts of town. The slowly traveling train gives you a unique opportunity to observe the lively and colorful life of the rural Burmese people. Disembark after 45 minutes - 1 hour in Insein township. One of the city's best fresh markets is here, filled with vendors and piles of colorful items for sale. Spend time walking amid the stalls examining the fruits, produce and meats on sale as well as chatting with the friendly locals. Return to the city center and explore the fabulous mix of architecture and sites. The streets are filled with historical buildings many of which have a faded colonial charm not seen elsewhere in Asia. You'll start at the post office - a lovely historic building- and walk to Sule Paya in the middle of downtown, passing by the Strand Hotel, Mahabandoola Garden and Independence Monument along the way. Visit Chinatown and Little India, two fabulously diverse and vibrant neighborhoods of Yangon. You'll see street markets, snack vendors and many places of worship as you walk along the street. Visit Kyaukhtatgyi Pagoda, home to a 70-meter long reclining Buddha. A visit to Kyaukhtatgyi provides a great overview of Buddhism with murals depicting the life of Buddha, the feet of the statue are carved with traditional symbols and often many locals gather to pay homage and pray. Visit Shwedagone Pagoda 'Great Pyramid of Fire'. This fabulous pagoda continues to dominate Yangon's landscape and is a remarkable architectural achievement. It is the perfect symbol of a country in which Buddhism pervades every aspect of life. The physical presence of the Shwedagon's golden stupa dominates Yangon and its spiritual magnetism in turn dominates Myanmar, attracting tens of thousands of pilgrims each year. The pagoda dates back about 2,500 years and was built to house 8 sacred hairs of the Buddha. This evening visit the farmer’s market and participate in the local religious event of lighting 1000 oil lamps on the pagoda platform together with the local pilgrims.
