There's much in Myanmar to capture the imagination and win the heart. Some images will stay with you forever - the fabulous view, from atop the Thatbyinnyu Temple in Pagan, of thousands of lavishly designed pagodas studding a vast plain by the muddy Irrawaddy and the awe and reverence in the face of a small child climbing the steps of Yangon's glittering Shwedagon. Around Yangon there are fabulous wonders, including the ancient monuments of Pegu, the near-by provincial capital. Myanmar's other famed city - Mandalay is the country's cultural center and the sight of many fine temples. In the neighboring countryside ox carts creep down bumpy roads and golden pagodas twinkle in the hills above sleepy hamlets. Yangon lies in the fertile delta country of Southern Myanmar, on the wide Yangon River. The city gives the impression of being full of trees and shade and shimmering stupas float above the treetops. The city only became the capital in 1885, when the British completed the conquest of Upper Myanmar and Mandalay’s brief period of the last Burmese kingdom ended.
