The TranzAlpine scenic train journey travels between Greymouth and Christchurch, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. From your carriage you’ll see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. All carriages include both one way seating and tabled group seating allowing you to experience the amazing views while enjoying the company of other passengers on-board. You will pass through 16 tunnels, and 5 viaducts, the highest being the Staircase standing at 73 meters. At approximately 6:10 PM arrive at the Christchurch Station. You will be met at the train station by a representative from A2B Luxury Lines and escorted to a waiting vehicle for your transfer to the George Hotel. At the George Hotel reservations for a Premium Executive Room have been confirmed for this evening. The George is a small boutique hotel, located in the city center, overlooking Hagley Park and the Avon River. The George has 2 world class dining restaurants where a team of 15 chefs have been pleasing the palates of guests for years. Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island and one of the most beautiful in New Zealand with its large public gardens, parks, river and majestic backdrop of the Port Hills. Known as New Zealand’s garden city, Christchurch is the most English of New Zealand’s cities. Christchurch is the provincial capital and also serves as the international gateway to the many scenic wonders of the South Island. The centre is small enough to be negotiated on foot, with the wonderful advantage of being perfectly flat. Explore the shops, galleries and theater of the Arts Center. Check out the Canterbury Museum for a great perspective on Maori and pioneer history, and the world’s best collection of artifacts from early Antarctic exploration. You can climb the steep steps up to the bell tower balcony of Christchurch Cathedral for a marvelous view of the city and distant mountains. Atop lovely Cashmere Hill sits ‘The Sign of the Takahe’ an excellent place to soak up the city views. Or perhaps rent a bicycle and see the sites as the locals do.
