DAY 17 GUILIN Meals included: Breakfast / Lunch Enjoy the day exploring Daxu Ancient Town, Reed Flute Cave and Elephant Trunk Hill. Daxu Ancient Town is located on the east bank of the Li River approximately 14 miles southeast of Guilin City. Having a history of more than 1000 years, the town originally formed in the early Northern Song Dynasty (960- 1126) and was the leader of four renowned ancient towns in the Guangxi Province as early as 600 years ago. Afterwards visit the Reed Flute Cave. The entrance to the Reed Flute Cave (Ludi Yan) lies at the foot of Guangming Hill. It is around 600,000 years old and received its name from the reeds that hid the entrance to it until its discovery in 1956, and which were used for making flutes. From various archaeological finds, however, we know that it was once used as a place of refuge by local inhabitants. The passage through this cave is 1,640 ft. long and leads along easily accessible paths and steps past a multitude of grotesquely formed stalagmites and stalactites. The center of the cavern is known as the Crystal Palace and can accommodate up to a thousand people. A row of stones in this hall is linked with a well-known legend, the combat between the king of the apes Sun Wukong and the Dragon King which took place in the Crystal Palace.
